Property owners or communities may be interested in purchasing trees from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The last day to order seedlings is Tuesday, March 11, 2025. The minimum order is 300 trees and various tree species are offered. The trees are root only trees - not potted.
The goal is to plant more native species trees in Minnesota.

Some counties in Minnesota also have tree seedling sales. You many want to consider these county tree sales, depending on where you live.
Local tree sales include:
Anoka Conservation District: Offers a tree sale with a variety of native species, with orders accepted until the 2nd Thursday in April and pickup scheduled for late April.
Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District: Conducts an annual tree sale, with orders typically accepted until mid-summer and pickup in late summer or early fall.
The type of tree selected should depend on the sunlight / shade in the property, and soil type. The MN DNR has a helpful table highlighting the best tree depending on the conditions. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/nursery/choosing.html
Most trees should be planted at a distance, typically 5-10 ft from any homes or other structures, depending on the tree's mature height and canopy span.
If you have questions about the trees recommended for your soil or location, you may want to contact an Arborist.
